Just like in a real encyclopedia, the content of a wiki is divided into pages. This tutorial will guide you step-by-step on one way to create a new page. I'll be using the Easy Crafts wiki as an example.

Step 1: The Contribute ▾ menu Edit

The first step is to open the Contribute ▾ menu towards the top of the page and choose Add a Page.

If you don't see a Contribute ▾ menu, that means your wiki has yet to update to the latest navigation system. What that means for you is in order to create a page, you need to follow an additional set of steps to get started.

Step 1A: Navigate to any page Edit

Find your way onto a page (what page you start on really doesn't matter, as long as it’s not your main page). If you find yourself on the main page and don't know how to get to another, the Random Page and Wiki Activity buttons in the top-right corner of the page will both bring you to places where you'll be able to follow the next step.

Step 1B: Click the Add a Page button Edit

The Add a Page button should be in the sidebar to the right of the page, under the search bar.

Step 2: Decide on a name Edit

Once Step 1 is completed, a popup box will appear, asking for the name of the page. When naming a page, it's a good idea to follow a few rules of thumb:

  • Page names should be short, try to keep it under 50 characters if possible.
  • If you have multiple subjects with the same name, differentiate them with parentheses. For example, Shrek (film) and Shrek (character).

Once you've typed in the name, click OK.

Step 3: Write! Edit

The next step is to type out your article. Write about whatever the page is about, and don't worry about getting it perfect. I mean, yes, you should put effort into it, but also remember that pages grow over time because other users can add to them.

The editor works just like Microsoft Word. The B button makes bolded text, the I button italicizes. The Photo and Table buttons do what you think they would. Play around with it a little, you'll get the hang of it. For a second toolbar with more text style options, click More. If you see a little "CreatePageTut - TemplatePuzzlePiece" icon, that's a template. In short, a template is a copy of a page inserted onto the current page. Step 4: Preview Edit

Click the Preview button on the righthand side of the page. Now, a popup will appear showing you the page before it's actually published, so you can read it and make sure it's perfect. It should look pretty much the same as it did in the editor (although now templates will display correctly). Note that JavaScript will not work in the preview box. If you find something wrong, click the X in the top-right corner or the Back button in the bottom-right corner. This step important because editing the page over and over again slows down the server and can make it hard for local administrators to sort through the [Link to applicable guide | list of recent changes].

Step 5: Publish Edit

Once you've got everything looking perfect, click the Publish button in the bottom-right corner of the preview box (next to the Back button) to publish your work to the web. After you've done that, anyone can read it and edit it as they please.
